Our Heritage

Three generations of horological expertise, preserving the art of timekeeping since 1998

The Story Behind Every Tick

The Beginning (1998)

What started as a modest garage workshop in Olympia, Washington, has evolved into the Pacific Northwest's most trusted timepiece restoration service. Thomas Southgate, a master horologist trained in Switzerland, returned to his hometown with a vision: to bridge the gap between traditional European craftsmanship and the growing appreciation for timepiece heritage in America.

The early days were marked by careful restorations of family heirlooms and vintage watches that collectors had given up hope for. Word spread quickly about the quality of work emerging from this small workshop, and by 2001, Southgate Jewelers had outgrown its humble beginnings.

"Every timepiece has a story. Our job is to not just repair the mechanism, but to preserve the legacy that the original craftsman intended."

Growth & Innovation (2002-2015)

As the reputation grew, so did the challenges. The shop began handling increasingly complex restorations, from delicate pocket watches from the 1800s to cutting-edge chronographs. The team expanded to include specialists in different aspects of horology.

During this period, Thomas's son Michael joined the business, bringing fresh perspectives and new techniques learned at prestigious horological schools in Germany. This generational blend of wisdom and innovation became the foundation of the shop's unique approach.

By 2010, Southgate Jewelers had established itself as the go-to destination for timepiece restoration throughout Washington and Oregon, with clients traveling from as far as California and British Columbia.

Excellence Today (2016-Present)

Today, under the leadership of master horologist David Chen, who joined the team in 2016, Southgate Jewelers represents the pinnacle of timepiece craftsmanship in the Pacific Northwest. The team has grown to include four certified technicians, each bringing specialized expertise.

The workshop now houses state-of-the-art equipment alongside traditional hand tools, allowing for the most precise restorations while maintaining the human touch that makes each repair unique. With over 5,000 successful restorations completed, the commitment to excellence remains unwavering.

From antique grandfather clocks to luxury Swiss watches, every timepiece receives the same meticulous attention to detail that has defined Southgate Jewelers for over 25 years.
